Tom Holland’s Latest Marvel Outing Just Dethroned a Major Titan in Box Office History

Even in its fourth weekend in theaters, Marvel’s flagship web-slinger refuses to lose momentum.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is dominating domestic charts once again, comfortably fending off new theatrical challengers like Jason Statham’s action vehicle Mutiny and a high-profile horror continuation. Sony Pictures projects the Tom Holland-led feature will pocket $36.5 million over the three-day frame following a solid $9.8 million haul on Friday.

Climbing the All-Time Ranks

That steady performance lifts the film’s cumulative North American total to an eye-popping $852.4 million through Sunday. By reaching this milestone, the blockbuster officially overtakes 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to capture the No. 3 spot among the highest-grossing domestic releases in cinema history. This achievement also crowns the title as Sony’s top-earning domestic release ever, hot on the heels of breaking the studio’s all-time global record last weekend.

Horror Lands in Second Place

Sony secured the top two spots at the box office this weekend. Taking second place, Insidious: Out of the Further generated $10.6 million on Friday, a tally that has Thursday preview screenings. The sixth entry in the long-running series—which originated in 2011 and is backed by Screen Gems, Stage 6 Films, and Blumhouse Atomic Monster—is on track for a $23.7 million launch across 3,330 North American locations.

Viewer reception proved somewhat divided. Featuring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and franchise veteran Lin Shaye, the ghost story centers on a young mother who can summon spirits. The release earned a C+ CinemaScore, matching 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door for the lowest grade across the entire horror franchise.
